MyFitnessPal does best on chain restaurants, because chains publish their numbers and its users have entered them. It struggles most with weighed portions and everyday phrasing, where the top search result is often a different food or a different size.
When Nouri isn't sure, it tells you
Every Nouri log comes with a confidence rating. That rating turned out to be honest:
| Nouri's confidence | Tests | Passed |
|---|---|---|
| High | 98 | 95 of 98 |
| Medium | 2 | 0 of 2 |
So a high-confidence answer is one you can trust, and a medium one is your cue to add a detail, like the size or the brand. Most apps hand you a number either way. Nouri also shows its reasoning for each item, so you can see how it got there and fix anything that looks off.
Where Nouri got it wrong
Nouri missed 5 of 100. Here they are, with what happened:
Nouri used a 136g avocado from its sources. USDA's standard "1 avocado" is 201g. Nouri rated this one medium confidence.
Nouri used a database entry for plain baked salmon that is leaner than USDA's farmed Atlantic salmon, so calories and fat came in low.
Nouri assumed an average bakery or chain cookie of about 30 to 35g. USDA's standard cookie is a small 15g one.
Nouri used values for condensed soup. USDA's standard cup is canned soup diluted with an equal amount of water.
Nouri assumed the sub without cheese or sauce. Subway's official 480 calories is the sub as Subway builds it by default. Nouri rated this one medium confidence.

How the scoring works
Each answer is scored against the reference with the same formula for both apps. We take the percentage error on calories, protein, carbs, and fat, cap each at 100%, and weight them: calories 40%, protein 25%, carbs 20%, fat 15%. Score = 100 x (1 - weighted error), rounded. To keep tiny numbers from blowing up the math, an error is measured against at least 10 calories or 2 grams.
A test passes at a score of 80 or more for simple foods, exact amounts, and restaurant items, and 70 or more for homemade meals and vague inputs, where real portions naturally vary.
How the answers were collected
- References: USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) values times USDA's own portion weights, or the restaurant chain's official nutrition page, PDF, or ordering data, checked October 6, 2026. Homemade meals are the sum of their ingredients.
- Nouri: each input sent once, as typed, to Nouri's production logging server, the same one the iPhone app uses. No retries, no edits, no picking the best of several runs.
- MyFitnessPal: each input searched on myfitnesspal.com while logged in, taking the top result and setting the serving to match the input. Homemade meals were searched one ingredient at a time and added up. Blank macros in MyFitnessPal count as zero, which is what a user sees.
- Trademarks: MyFitnessPal and its logo are trademarks of MyFitnessPal, Inc., shown here only to identify the app we tested. Nouri is not affiliated with or endorsed by MyFitnessPal.
- Limits: one run on one day. AI answers can vary a little between runs, and both apps change over time. Vague inputs have no single right answer, so we used USDA's standard portions and a wider pass mark.

FAQ
How accurate is Nouri?
In our October 2026 benchmark of 100 meals, Nouri averaged 92.1 out of 100 and passed 95 of 100 tests against USDA and official restaurant data. Every input, reference, and answer is published on this page.
Who ran this test?
We did. We make Nouri, so we published everything you need to check us: the test list, the reference sources, both apps' raw answers, and the scoring script.
Why compare against MyFitnessPal?
It is one of the best-known calorie trackers and the one most people compare against. Its database also covers the restaurant chains in the test, so it had a fair shot.
Was MyFitnessPal given a fair chance?
Yes. We took the top search result, as a user would, and set the serving to match the amount in the input. For homemade meals we searched each ingredient separately and added them up, which is the most favorable way to log a meal in a database app.
What does the confidence rating mean?
Nouri rates every estimate high, medium, or low confidence. In this test, high-confidence answers passed 95 of 98, and the 2 answers rated lower were all misses. When Nouri is unsure, it tells you, so you know when to add detail.
Does this test photo logging?
No. Every input was typed text, which is also what Nouri turns a photo into before it calculates. Photo accuracy depends on how clearly the food is visible, so we kept this test to text.
