Nouri vs Cal AI: Which AI Calorie Tracker Fits How You Eat?
Nouri and Cal AI both use AI to log food from opposite starting points: typing a sentence versus photographing the plate. Features, pricing, an at-a-glance table, and a 12-question FAQ, with sources.
Cal AI and Nouri are both AI calorie trackers, and they start from opposite places: Cal AI made photo-first logging mainstream, point the camera and let AI estimate the plate, while Nouri is text-first, describe your food the way you would text a friend and get an item-by-item estimate back. Cal AI runs on iPhone and Android with barcode scanning; Nouri is iPhone (iOS only) with Siri logging that works while your phone stays locked. Both offer a 3-day trial; Nouri is $9.99/month or $79.99/year, while Cal AI's App Store listing shows Unlimited purchases from $2.99 to $29.99. Both exist because database trackers burn people out, so the real question is which input method you will still be using in week six. Full disclosure: we make Nouri, and every Cal AI claim below comes from its own website and App Store listing, cited with the date checked.

Nouri: log food like you'd text a friend
How it works:
- Type what you ate in plain language: "2 eggs and toast with butter"
- Or say it, snap a photo, or use Siri hands-free with your phone locked
- The AI returns calories, protein, carbs, and fat with an item-by-item breakdown you can check
- Every meal gets a Health Score, and an AI coach reads your actual week and gives practical guidance
Strengths:
- Handles home cooking and restaurant meals with no barcode or database entry: "mom's arroz con pollo" is a valid log
- Siri logging works end to end without opening the app
- Shows its reasoning per item, and you can tap Recalculate with added context like "it was a large portion"
- Syncs daily nutrition totals to Apple Health and pulls in your activity
Weaknesses:
- iPhone only, no Android version
- No barcode scanner: you describe packaged food instead of scanning it
- Newer app with a shorter track record than the big incumbents
Best for: people who quit database trackers, cook most of their own meals, or want logging to take ten seconds.
Pricing: $9.99/month or $79.99/year (USD), with a 3-day free trial on the yearly plan (download Nouri)
Cal AI: point your camera at the plate
Everything below comes from Cal AI's website and App Store listing, checked August 29, 2026.
How it works:
- Snap a photo of your meal; the app uses your phone's depth sensor to estimate food volume
- Scan a barcode or a nutrition label for packaged foods
- Describe the meal in words when a photo will not work
- Tracks calories, protein, carbs, and fat, plus water, weight, workouts, and steps
Strengths:
- Photo-first flow is fast when the food is right in front of you
- Barcode and nutrition-label scanning for packaged foods
- Available on both iPhone and Android
- Broad feature set: saved meals, step counting integration, workout and weight logging
Weaknesses:
- Photo-first logging assumes the meal is in front of you; the lunch you forgot to photograph still has to be typed in later
- Its site does not mention hands-free logging through Siri or any voice assistant
- More app to manage if all you want is fast calorie logging
Best for: people who want photo-based logging, need Android, or scan a lot of packaged food.
Pricing: subscription after a 3-day free trial; its App Store listing shows in-app purchases for the Unlimited plan ranging from $2.99 to $29.99 (calai.app)
The real difference: what the input method can see
A camera reads the surface of a plate; a sentence carries what you actually know. That distinction decides most real meals. Mixed and layered food, the burrito under foil, the curry over rice, hides most of its contents from any lens, and the calorie-dense parts, oil, butter, dressing, are precisely the invisible ones, a problem we document with evidence in Why Calorie Tracking Apps Are Inaccurate. Meanwhile "chipotle bowl, double chicken, cheese, guac" contains everything the estimate needs, including the parts no camera could see. Photo-first is at its best with a clearly visible plate in front of you; text-first is at its best everywhere else, including the meal you remember at 9pm. Nouri also takes photos, but the sentence is the primary interface because it is the highest-information input you own.
What logging actually looks like in Nouri
This is the part only we can write, because we built it and use it every day.
A real log takes one sentence. Type "leftover pad thai, small plate" and Nouri comes back in a few seconds with the estimate, split item by item, so you can see what the AI assumed about portion size and ingredients. If it guessed wrong, you do not start over. You add context, "it was a big plate," hit Recalculate, and the numbers update.
The Siri flow is the one that surprises people. With your phone locked in your pocket or gym bag, you say "Hey Siri, track food in Nouri." Siri asks what you ate. You answer like a human: "a breakfast burrito." A card appears on the lock screen with the calories, the macro breakdown, and how much you have left for the day. You never opened the app. That flow exists because the meals people fail to log are the ones where their hands are full.
We built it this way after watching people quit photo and database trackers for the same reason: any flow with more than one step gets skipped on a busy day, and three skipped days becomes a deleted app.
FAQ
Is Nouri better than Cal AI?
They are built for different eaters: Cal AI for photo-first logging with barcode support on both platforms, Nouri for typed and spoken logging on iPhone. If your meals are usually in front of you and photographable, Cal AI fits; if they are more often described than photographed, Nouri fits.
How much does Cal AI cost?
Its site states a 3-day free trial, and its App Store listing shows in-app purchases for the Unlimited plan ranging from $2.99 to $29.99 (checked August 29, 2026). Exact plan pricing is shown in-app.
How much does Nouri cost?
$9.99/month or $79.99/year (USD), with a 3-day free trial on the yearly plan.
Does Cal AI work on Android?
Yes, its site lists both iOS and Android. Nouri is iPhone (iOS only), which makes Cal AI the choice for Android users between these two.
How accurate is Cal AI compared to Nouri?
Neither company publishes benchmarked accuracy and we will not invent numbers. What is structural: photos estimate from the visible surface of a plate, while typed descriptions carry ingredients no camera can see; both approaches inherit the label and estimation error sources covered in our accuracy guide.
Can Nouri scan barcodes like Cal AI?
No. Nouri's approach to packaged food is describing it, "the 190-calorie protein bar," while Cal AI offers barcode and nutrition-label scanning per its site.
Does Cal AI have Siri logging?
Its site does not mention Siri or voice-assistant logging. Nouri's Siri flow logs a full meal with the phone locked, which is its most distinctive feature in this comparison.
Which is better for eating out?
Restaurant plates favor description: you know your order, and mixed dishes hide their contents from a camera. Nouri logs the sentence you said at the counter; our restaurant guide covers the full method either way.
Which is better for packaged food?
Cal AI, if scanning matters to you: barcode plus nutrition-label scanning is exactly the packaged-food workflow. In Nouri you describe the item instead.
Do both apps track macros?
Yes, both list calories, protein, carbs, and fat. Cal AI additionally tracks water, weight, workouts, and steps per its site; Nouri adds a per-meal Health Score and an AI coach, and computes targets from the published formula.
Can I try both before choosing?
Yes, both offer 3-day trials. A fair test: log every real meal for three days in each, including the forgotten ones and the ones eaten with your hands full, and keep whichever app still has complete days.
Why did you build Nouri if Cal AI already existed?
Because photo-first did not survive contact with my real meals: estimates from the plate's surface ran low on mixed dishes, and the meals I failed to log were the ones I could not photograph. One typed or spoken sentence fixed both, and that is the entire product.
Bottom line
Cal AI is the established photo-first tracker: camera plus depth sensing, barcode scanning, both platforms, long feature list. Nouri bets on the sentence instead, because it carries information no camera can see and takes ten seconds anywhere, including through Siri with your phone locked. Choose Cal AI for Android, barcodes, and photographable plates. Choose Nouri if you are on iPhone and your meals are more often described than photographed: home cooking, restaurant orders, the burrito you ate an hour ago. Start either one with an honest target from Calorie Counting 101, and judge by week six, not day one.
