Ideal Weight Calculator for Your Height (Chart, BMI Range and Formulas)
At 5'4" the healthy BMI weight range is 108 to 145 lb (49 to 66 kg). Enter your height for your own range, plus what the four classic ideal weight formulas say, in pounds and kilograms.
| Formula | Pounds | Kilograms |
|---|
These formulas were written for people 5 feet and taller. Below that, the per-inch slope is run backward, so treat them as rougher estimates.
A range, not a target. Health is more than a number on a chart: muscle, frame, age, sleep and how you feel all count. If you have a history of disordered eating, please work with a doctor or dietitian rather than a weight goal.
How it is calculated
Healthy BMI range. BMI is weight in kg divided by height in meters squared. Solving for weight gives 18.5 x m² at the low end and 24.9 x m² at the top. The CDC calls 18.5 to less than 25 "healthy weight" for adults 20 and older, and WHO uses the same cut-offs. Pounds are kg x 2.20462.
Ideal body weight formulas. Each starts from a base at 5 feet and adds a fixed amount per inch above it:
| Formula | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| Devine (1974) | 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch | 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch |
| Robinson (1983) | 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch | 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch |
| Miller (1983) | 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch | 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch |
| Hamwi (1964) | 100 lb + 5 lb per inch | 106 lb + 6 lb per inch |
They were made to estimate medication doses from old insurance height and weight tables, which is why clinicians still use them and why none of them is a personal goal. A 2000 review by Pai and Paloucek traced their origins and found they agree closely because the source tables did.
A worked example
5'4" is 64 inches, or 1.6256 m. BMI range: 18.5 x 1.6256² = 48.9 kg and 24.9 x 1.6256² = 65.8 kg, so 49 to 66 kg or 108 to 145 lb. Devine for a woman: 45.5 + 2.3 x 4 = 54.7 kg, about 121 lb. Hamwi for a man: 106 + 6 x 4 = 130 lb.
What BMI leaves out
BMI does not tell fat from muscle or bone, and it says nothing about where fat sits. People with a lot of muscle often score above 25 and are healthy, older adults may do better a little higher, and a WHO expert consultation found health risks begin at lower BMIs in many Asian populations. Your doctor reads it alongside blood pressure, labs, history and habits.

FAQ
What is the ideal weight for my height?
For adults, the CDC and WHO healthy BMI range is 18.5 to 24.9, which at 5'4" is 108 to 145 lb and at 5'10" is 129 to 174 lb. Enter your height above for your exact range in lb and kg. It is a broad range, not a single target.
What is the ideal weight for a 5'4" female?
The healthy BMI range at 5'4" (163 cm) is 108 to 145 lb (49 to 66 kg). The four ideal body weight formulas give a 5'4" woman 120 to 129 lb. At 5'2" the BMI range is 101 to 136 lb, and at 5'6" it is 115 to 154 lb.
What is the ideal weight for a 5'9" male?
At 5'9" (175 cm) the healthy BMI range is 125 to 169 lb (57 to 76 kg), and the formulas put a man at 152 to 160 lb.
What is the ideal weight for a 6 foot man?
At 6 feet (183 cm) the healthy BMI range is 136 to 184 lb (62 to 83 kg). The formulas give 161 to 178 lb, with Hamwi highest and Miller lowest.
What is the ideal weight for 170 cm female in kg?
At 170 cm the healthy BMI range is 53 to 72 kg for any adult. The formulas give a 170 cm woman 61 to 63 kg.
Is the ideal weight different for men and women?
The BMI range is the same for everyone. The four formulas have a women's and a men's version because they were fitted to sex-split height and weight tables, so they only come in those two versions. If neither fits you, the BMI range still applies.
How accurate is BMI?
BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis. It does not tell fat from muscle or bone, or show where fat sits, so muscular people can score high while healthy. A WHO expert panel also found health risk starts at lower BMIs in many Asian populations.
Which ideal weight formula should I use?
None of them is a personal goal. Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi were built from old insurance height and weight tables, mostly to estimate medication doses, and a 2000 review found they agree closely because the tables did. Looking at all four next to the BMI range gives a fair picture of the spread.
Does body frame size change my ideal weight?
Bone structure and muscle do change what a healthy weight looks like, but we could not verify one standard frame adjustment from a primary source, so this calculator does not apply one. If you have a large frame or a lot of muscle, expect to sit higher in the range, or above it, and still be healthy.
Should I try to reach my ideal weight?
Not necessarily. Plenty of people are healthy above or below these numbers, and how you eat, move, sleep and feel matters more than one figure. Talk to your doctor about what is right for you, and if you have a history of disordered eating, please work with a professional rather than a chart.
What is the easiest way to track what I eat while working toward a healthy weight?
Use an app that makes tracking take seconds. In Nouri you type or say what you ate, like "chicken salad and a latte," and it works out calories and macros with each item shown, so you can adjust anything. You can even say "Hey Siri, track food in Nouri" from the lock screen.
