Guess the Calories

Calorie-dense foods like oil, granola and pastries are the easiest to guess low. Play 15 rounds of real foods, every answer from USDA FoodData Central or the chain's own menu data, and see how close your eye really is.

Even dietitians guess low. In one study they still recorded about 223 calories a day less than they burned. So Nouri estimates for you: type or say what you ate and get calories with per-item reasoning. See how it works →

How the scoring works

Each round scores 100 minus your percentage error, never below zero. Your final score is the average of all 15 rounds, and the share line uses that number.

A worked example

A cup of granola is 597 calories. Guess 400 and you are 197 off: 197 / 597 = 33% error, so the round scores 67. Guess 600 and you score 99. Guess 1,300 and you are more than 100% off, so the round scores 0. Over-guessing a light food counts the same as under-guessing a heavy one.

Each game draws 15 foods at random from a pool of 46, so no two games match. The game stores nothing: refresh and it forgets you were here.

Why your guesses run low

Calorie density fools the eye. A tablespoon of olive oil (119) beats a medium apple (95), and a cup of granola (597) outweighs a big bowl of fruit several times over. Restaurant food stacks this up: Chipotle's chicken bowl with rice, black beans, salsa, cheese and guac adds up to 180 + 210 + 130 + 25 + 110 + 230 = 885 calories from Chipotle's own per-ingredient data.

It is not just you. In a 1992 study in the New England Journal of Medicine, people who reported eating under 1,200 calories a day had actually eaten 47% more than they recorded, measured in the lab (Lichtman et al., PMID 1454084). In a 2002 study using doubly labeled water, registered dietitians underreported by about 223 calories a day and non-dietitians by about 429 (Champagne et al., PMID 12396160). Good news: that gap is a measurement problem, not a willpower one. The usual culprits are in common food tracking mistakes, and the app side of the story is in why calorie tracking apps are inaccurate.

No shame for any score here. If calorie numbers ever feel stressful, or you have a history of disordered eating, it is completely okay to skip the game and work with a professional.

USDA items use USDA's per-100g value times USDA's own portion weight, rounded. Restaurant items are the chain's published values, standard recipe. All checked Oct 25, 2026.

FAQ

How many calories are in a Caesar salad at a restaurant?

Panera's whole Caesar salad with chicken is 670 calories with dressing, and the whole Caesar without chicken is 530, per Panera's official nutrition guide. The dressing alone on a whole salad is 320. Salads earn their healthy reputation from the greens, but the calories mostly come from what goes on top.

Why are calories so hard to guess?

Calories hide in density, not size. A tablespoon of olive oil is 119 calories and a whole cucumber is 45, so the small thing can easily beat the big thing. Fats, dressings, nuts, granola and baked goods pack a lot into a little.

Do most people underestimate how much they eat?

Underreporting is common in research. In a 1992 New England Journal of Medicine study, a group of people who reported eating under 1,200 calories a day actually ate 47% more on average than they recorded, measured in the lab. It is a measurement problem, not a character flaw.

Do dietitians guess calories better than everyone else?

Better, but not perfectly. In a 2002 doubly labeled water study, registered dietitians underreported their intake by about 223 calories a day, while non-dietitians underreported by about 429. Even trained professionals come in low.

What foods have more calories than people think?

From this game's verified pool: a cup of granola is 597, a cup of trail mix is 693, a dark chocolate bar is 604, and a Panera Kitchen Sink cookie is 810. Bread bowls, chips and guac, and big sodas also surprise a lot of players.

What foods have fewer calories than people think?

A cup of watermelon or strawberries is 46, a whole cucumber is 45, 10 baby carrots are 35, and 3 cups of air-popped popcorn are 93. Chick-fil-A's 8-count grilled nuggets are 130.

How is my score calculated?

Each round scores 100 minus your percentage error, with a floor of zero. Guess 450 for a 500-calorie food and you are 10% off, so you score 90. Your final score is the average of all 15 rounds.

Where do the calorie numbers come from?

Whole foods come from USDA FoodData Central, using USDA's own portion weights, with the FDC ID listed for every item. Restaurant items come from each chain's official published nutrition data. Everything was checked Oct 25, 2026.

Is a low score bad?

Not at all. Most people are off on calorie-dense foods, which is exactly why tracking tools exist. If calorie numbers ever feel stressful, or you have a history of disordered eating, it is okay to skip the game and work with a professional.

How many calories are in a tablespoon of olive oil?

119 calories, from USDA FoodData Central (FDC 171413): 884 calories per 100g times USDA's 13.5g tablespoon. That is more than a medium apple at 95.

What is the easiest way to track calories without guessing?

Let an app do the estimating. In Nouri you type or say what you ate, like a burrito bowl with guac, and it returns calories and macros with per-item reasoning and a confidence rating you can adjust. You can even say "Hey Siri, track food in Nouri" from your lock screen.
