A whole medium avocado is about 322 calories and half is about 161, with 29 grams of fat in the whole fruit, by USDA FoodData Central data. Per 100 grams it is 160 calories, which puts avocado in a category of its own among produce: it is a fat food that grows on a tree. That is not a criticism, fat is satiating and avocado brings fiber and potassium with it, but it explains why "just some avocado" on a salad can cost more than the chicken on it, and why avocado is one of the most commonly under-logged foods in an otherwise careful day.

Official USDA numbers

Portion Weight Calories Fat Carbs Protein
Per 100g 100g 160 14.7g 8.5g 2.0g
Half avocado 100g 161 14.7g 8.6g 2.0g
Whole avocado 201g 322 29.5g 17.2g 4.0g

USDA's whole-fruit portion is 201 grams of edible flesh, which is a mid-size Hass. Smaller fruit runs nearer 250 calories whole, large ones past 350. Note the shape of the row: at 14.7g of fat per 100g, roughly 80 percent of an avocado's calories come from fat, at 9 calories per gram, the density explained in How to Track Macros.

Why avocado is a logging trap

Avocado gets treated as a vegetable in the mind and a fat in the body. It is green, it comes from produce, it is "healthy," and all of that is true while it is also 322 calories a fruit. Combine that with the fact that nobody measures it, portions are scoops and halves, and it becomes one of the reliable invisible contributors we list in Common Food Logging Mistakes.

The fix is simply saying the amount out loud in the log. "Avocado toast with half an avocado" is a different meal from "avocado toast, loaded," and in Nouri both are one-sentence logs that come back itemized, so the avocado appears as its own number instead of disappearing into the word "toast." FAQ

How many calories in one avocado?

About 322 for USDA's 201g medium fruit. Small fruit is nearer 250, large past 350.

How many calories in half an avocado?

About 161, with roughly 15g of fat.

Why are avocados so high in calories?

Because they are mostly fat, and fat carries 9 calories per gram versus 4 for carbs and protein. About 80 percent of an avocado's calories are fat calories.

Is avocado good for weight loss?

It can be: the fat is satiating and the fiber helps, but it is calorie-dense, so portion control matters more than with almost any other produce. Half a fruit is a reasonable serving.

How many calories in guacamole?

Depends on the scoop: Chipotle's official add-on is 230 calories, roughly three-quarters of a whole avocado. Homemade guacamole tracks the avocado in it, plus whatever else goes in.

How many calories in avocado toast?

The avocado half is 161; add the bread (typically 70 to 120 per slice) and any oil, butter, egg, or feta on top. A realistic range is 250 to 500.

How many carbs are in an avocado?

About 17g in a whole fruit, much of it fiber, which is why avocado is popular on low-carb plans despite the calorie density.

Does avocado have protein?

A little: 4g in a whole fruit. It is a fat source, not a protein source, which is why it pairs well with the protein-first approach in How to Track Macros.

How many calories in a quarter of an avocado?

About 80.

Is avocado oil the same as avocado for tracking?

No, oil is pure fat at roughly 120 calories a tablespoon, denser than the fruit. If you cook with it, say so in the log; it is exactly the invisible cooking fat that skews estimates.

How do I log avocado without weighing it?

Use halves and quarters, they are the natural units, and stay consistent. "Half an avocado" logged the same way every time keeps your trend readable.

Are avocados healthier than butter for calories?

Per gram, avocado is far less dense than butter (160 vs about 717 per 100g), so swapping butter for avocado on toast usually lowers the total while adding fiber. Both still deserve a line in the log.

Say the portion out loud, half or whole, and log the plate as one sentence in Nouri. Foundations in Calorie Counting 101.
