How the calculator works
McDonald's Australia publishes a nutrition panel for every standard menu item, with energy in kilojoules plus protein, fat, saturated fat, carbs, sugars and sodium per serve. Fries, soft drinks, shakes and coffees are listed separately for each size, and McNuggets for each piece count, so nothing here is scaled or guessed. The calculator adds up the official values for everything on your tray.
Calories are worked out from the kilojoule total with the standard factor: calories (kcal) = kJ ÷ 4.184. McDonald's also prints its own kcal figure, and ours lands within 5 kcal of it for every item. The percentage compares your order with the 8,700 kJ average adult daily intake that McDonald's and every Aussie menu board uses as a reference. Your own needs could be higher or lower, and the daily calorie needs calculator gives a personal estimate.
Worked example: the classic Big Mac meal
Big Mac 2,600 kJ + medium fries 1,320 kJ + medium Coca-Cola 568 kJ = 4,488 kJ. Then 4,488 ÷ 4.184 = 1,073 calories, and 4,488 ÷ 8,700 = 52% of the reference day. Upsize to large fries (1,630 kJ) and a large Coke (868 kJ) and the meal becomes 5,098 kJ, or 1,218 calories.

Swaps that save the most kilojoules
- Medium Coke to Coke Zero Sugar: 568 kJ down to 7 kJ, saving 561 kJ (134 calories).
- Large meal back to medium: large fries and a large Coke add 610 kJ over the medium versions.
- Medium fries to small: 1,320 kJ down to 914 kJ, saving 406 kJ (97 calories).
- Full cream to skim in a medium flat white: 666 kJ down to 493 kJ, and protein goes up from 8.5g to 12.1g.
- McCrispy to McSpicy: 2,680 kJ down to 2,320 kJ with 3.6g more protein.
None of these are rules. Plenty of people happily keep the full-sugar Coke and swap something else, and that is the point of seeing the numbers. If you have a history of disordered eating, please work with your GP or an accredited practising dietitian before changing how you eat.
