Calories in Coffee: Every Creamer, Milk, Sugar, and Syrup Add-In
Black coffee is about 2 calories a cup by USDA data. What milk, cream, sugar, creamer, syrup, and butter add, plus the per-week and per-year math.
A cup of black coffee is about 2 calories, and a shot of espresso about 3, by USDA FoodData Central data. The coffee is never the problem. A tablespoon of half-and-half adds 20, a teaspoon of sugar 16, a tablespoon of heavy cream 51, and two tablespoons of a sweet vanilla syrup 80. Two doctored coffees a day can quietly reach 1,000+ calories a week.
Black coffee and espresso
| Coffee (USDA) | Portion | Calories | Caffeine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brewed coffee | 6 fl oz (178g) | 2 | 71mg |
| Brewed coffee | 8 fl oz cup (237g) | 2 | 95mg |
| Brewed coffee | 12 fl oz | 4 | 142mg |
| Brewed coffee | 16 fl oz | 5 | 190mg |
| Espresso, single shot | 1 fl oz (29.6g) | 3 | 63mg |
| Espresso, double shot | 2 fl oz | 5 | 126mg |
USDA lists brewed coffee at 1 calorie per 100 grams and espresso at 9, both with essentially no fat, protein, or sugar. The 12 and 16 ounce rows are 1.5 and 2 USDA cups. For a calorie log, black coffee and straight espresso round to zero. Everything below is what actually counts.
Milk in coffee
These come straight from our calories in milk guide, at USDA's own fluid ounce weights:
| Milk | Splash (1 fl oz) | Half cup (4 fl oz) | Cup (8 fl oz) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole | 19 | 75 | 149 |
| 2% | 15 | 61 | 122 |
| 1% | 13 | 51 | 102 |
| Skim | 10 | 42 | 83 |
| Soy | 13 | 52 | 104 |
| Oat | 14 | 55 | 110 |
| Almond, unsweetened | about 5 | 20 | 39 |
The half cup and almond splash are half and an eighth of the USDA cup figures. A tablespoon of whole milk is about 9. A splash barely registers. A latte does: an 8-ounce cup of steamed milk with a shot is about 125 calories in 2% and 152 in whole (milk plus a 3-calorie shot), which is why milk is most of a coffee shop latte's total.
Cream and half-and-half
| Add-in (USDA) | Tablespoon (15g) | Fluid ounce | Fat per tbsp |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half-and-half | 20 | 40 | 1.7g |
| Heavy whipping cream | 51 | 101 | 5.4g |
| Half-and-half, single-serve container (15g) | 20 | 1.7g |
Heavy cream is two and a half times half-and-half per spoon, and almost all of it is fat. A "keto coffee" with two tablespoons of heavy cream is 104 calories before anything else goes in. Half-and-half is the middle ground: richer than milk, about 40 calories for a typical two-tablespoon pour.
Sugar, honey, and other sweeteners
| Sweetener (USDA) | Portion | Calories | Sugar |
|---|---|---|---|
| Granulated sugar | 1 teaspoon (4.2g) | 16 | 4.2g |
| Granulated sugar | 1 packet (2.8g) | 11 | 2.8g |
| Granulated sugar | 1 cube (2.3g) | 9 | 2.3g |
| Honey | 1 tablespoon (21g) | 64 | 17.2g |
| Honey | 1 packet (14g) | 43 | 11.5g |
| Agave syrup | 1 teaspoon (6.9g) | 21 | 4.7g |
A restaurant sugar packet is smaller than most people's teaspoon, 2.8 grams against 4.2. If you spoon sugar from a bowl, two heaped spoons can be well over the 32 calories that two level teaspoons would be. Honey is denser than sugar by volume, so a squeeze from the bear is rarely as light as it feels.
Creamers: dairy-free, powdered, and flavored
USDA's generic creamer entries, all at USDA portion weights:
| Creamer (USDA) | Portion | Calories | Fat | Sugar |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid, flavored | 1 tablespoon (15g) | 38 | 2.0g | 5.0g |
| Liquid, classic single-serve cup | 1 container (15g) | 20 | 1.5g | 0g |
| Liquid, light | 1 fl oz (30g) | 21 | 1.1g | 2.7g |
| Powdered | 1 teaspoon (2g) | 11 | 0.7g | 0.2g |
| Powdered | 1 packet (3g) | 16 | 1.0g | 0.2g |
| Powdered, flavored | 4 teaspoons (12g) | 58 | 2.6g | 7.0g |
| SILK Original Creamer | 1 tablespoon | 15 | 1.0g | 0g |
| SILK French Vanilla Creamer | 1 tablespoon | 20 | 1.0g | 3.0g |
Brand labels, from the brand's own site:
| Brand creamer (official label) | Serving | Calories | Fat | Sugar |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| International Delight French Vanilla | 1 tablespoon (15 ml) | 35 | 1.5g | 5g |
The flavored creamers land in the same place: about 35 to 38 calories and 5 grams of sugar per tablespoon. The catch is the tablespoon. Most people pour by eye, and a "splash" of flavored creamer is often two or three tablespoons, which is 70 to 114 calories. The SILK figures are USDA's records for those products, and brand recipes change, so check the bottle you buy against them. We tried to pull Coffee mate's official nutrition pages for this guide, but the site was unavailable when we checked, so we have left those numbers out rather than guess.
Flavored syrups
| Syrup | Serving | Calories | Carbs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Torani Vanilla (official label) | 2 tablespoons | 80 | 20g |
| Torani Sugar Free Vanilla (official label) | 2 tablespoons | 0 | 0g |
| Chocolate syrup (USDA) | 2 tablespoons (39g) | 109 | 25.4g |
USDA has no entry for a coffee shop style flavored syrup, so the vanilla rows are Torani's own published labels. Two tablespoons of a regular syrup is 80 calories of pure sugar, the same as five teaspoons of granulated sugar. Sugar-free syrups are the one add-in that genuinely costs nothing. Chocolate syrup for a homemade mocha runs higher still at 109.

Butter coffee and "bulletproof" coffee
| Add-in (USDA) | Portion | Calories | Fat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Butter, salted | 1 tablespoon (14.2g) | 102 | 11.5g |
| Coconut oil | 1 tablespoon (13.6g) | 121 | 13.5g |
A butter coffee made with a tablespoon of butter and a tablespoon of coconut oil is 2 + 102 + 121 = 225 calories, nearly all from fat. USDA has no entry for MCT oil, so if you use it instead of coconut oil, take the number from your bottle's label. Either way this is a small meal in a mug, and it should be logged like one.
Your daily coffee, per week and per year
Two coffees a day, every day, at the per-item numbers above:
| Your usual cup | Per cup | Per day (2 cups) | Per week | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black | 2 | 4 | 28 | 1,460 |
| Splash of whole milk + 1 sugar packet | 2 + 19 + 11 = 32 | 64 | 448 | 23,360 |
| 2 tbsp half-and-half + 2 tsp sugar | 2 + 40 + 32 = 74 | 148 | 1,036 | 54,020 |
| 2 tbsp flavored creamer (International Delight) | 2 + 70 = 72 | 144 | 1,008 | 52,560 |
| 2 tbsp heavy cream | 2 + 102 = 104 | 208 | 1,456 | 75,920 |
| 2 tbsp vanilla syrup + 2 tbsp half-and-half | 2 + 80 + 40 = 122 | 244 | 1,708 | 89,060 |
| Butter coffee (butter + coconut oil) | 225 | 450 | 3,150 | 164,250 |
Put another way, the half-and-half and sugar habit adds 54,020 calories a year, the same as 27 full days of eating at 2,000 calories a day. The vanilla-syrup cup is about 44 and a half days' worth. None of these are bad choices. They are just real, and a log that records "coffee" without the add-ins is missing the part with calories in it.
The fastest wins, in order: swap regular syrup for sugar-free (80 saved per cup), swap heavy cream for half-and-half (62 saved per two tablespoons), and measure your creamer pour once with an actual tablespoon so you know what your "splash" really is.
How to log coffee in Nouri
When I switched from MyFitnessPal to photo trackers, my estimates kept coming in low, and the cause was always something the camera could not see. Coffee is the purest case. A mug of black coffee and a mug with two tablespoons of heavy cream and two of vanilla syrup look nearly identical from above, and the difference is 102 + 80 = 182 calories.
So in Nouri, coffee gets said, not seen. "Coffee with two tablespoons of half-and-half and two sugars" goes in exactly as written, typed like a note, spoken, or told to Siri from the lock screen with "Hey Siri, track food in Nouri." Nouri shows calories and macros right away with its reasoning per item and a confidence rating, so you can check it counted half-and-half and not milk. If you used heavy cream after all, add that and it recalculates. In our own 100-meal accuracy benchmark, Nouri scored 92.1/100 (MyFitnessPal 77.0); the method and data are on the accuracy page. Nouri is iPhone (iOS only), and you can try it free.
Sugar adds up quietly too. Nouri tracks sugar against a daily goal, so two sweetened coffees show up next to everything else you ate that day, not hidden in one line called "coffee." Say "the usual, but with oat milk" to Nouri before your first sip and the barista is not the only one who knows your order.
