How Many Calories Do You Burn Shopping on Black Friday? (Mall Walking, Carrying Bags, Standing in Line)
A 4-hour Black Friday trip burns about 580 to 870 calories (60 to 90 kg), plus 7,000 to 9,500 steps. Minute-by-minute MET math and the Cyber Monday couch.
A realistic 4-hour Black Friday shopping trip burns about 580 calories at 60 kg (132 lb), 725 at 75 kg (165 lb) and 870 at 90 kg (198 lb), using 2024 Compendium MET values. That is roughly 340 to 510 more than four hours on the couch. Expect about 7,000 to 9,500 steps. Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27.
Short version: shopping is real movement, mostly light, with a few surprisingly decent bursts (hauling bags across the mall is a 4.0 MET activity). It is not a workout plan, and it does not need to be. It's a fun number to know while you stand in line for a discounted air fryer.
How do you calculate calories burned shopping?
Same method as our weird things that burn calories guide. Researchers rate activities in METs (metabolic equivalents), where 1 MET is your resting rate, roughly 1 calorie per kilogram of body weight per hour.
- Calories = METs x weight in kg x hours
- Extra calories (above what the couch burns anyway) = (METs minus 1) x kg x hours
Every value below comes from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities. We ran the numbers for three people: 60 kg, 75 kg and 90 kg. Bigger bodies burn more doing the same thing. That's physics, not a scoreboard.
METs are averages. Your real number depends on your size, your pace, and how ruthlessly you go after the TV aisle.
How many calories does each Black Friday activity burn per hour?
Here is every shopping-adjacent activity we found in the Compendium, per hour. One honest note: there is no "doorbuster sprint" code (we checked), so we used "jogging, general" as the closest real entry.
| Activity | Compendium code | METs | 60 kg (132 lb) | 75 kg (165 lb) | 90 kg (198 lb) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sitting quietly (the couch baseline) | 07021 | 1.0 | 60 | 75 | 90 |
| Standing in line | 07040 | 1.3 | 78 | 98 | 117 |
| Eating, sitting (food court) | 13030 | 1.5 | 90 | 112 | 135 |
| Non-food shopping, with or without cart | 05065 | 2.3 | 138 | 172 | 207 |
| Putting away groceries or packages | 05055 | 2.5 | 150 | 188 | 225 |
| Walking, slow, 2.0 to 2.4 mph | 17152 | 2.8 | 168 | 210 | 252 |
| Food shopping with a cart, or carrying a 10 lb bag | 05060 | 3.3 | 198 | 248 | 297 |
| Walking, moderate, 2.8 to 3.4 mph | 17190 | 3.8 | 228 | 285 | 342 |
| Loading items into a car | 05146 | 3.8 | 228 | 285 | 342 |
| Carrying 5 to 14 lb (bags, boxes), moderate pace | 17016 | 4.0 | 240 | 300 | 360 |
| Stair climbing, slow pace | 17133 | 4.5 | 270 | 338 | 405 |
| Jogging, general (the doorbuster stand-in) | 12020 | 7.5 | 450 | 562 | 675 |
A few things jump out:
- Carrying your bags (4.0) beats browsing without them (2.3) by a lot. The haul is the workout.
- Standing in line (1.3) is barely above the couch (1.0). The line burns patience more than calories.
- Pushing a cart is not a separate code. The Compendium folds it into "food shopping with or without a grocery cart" at 3.3, and "non-food shopping, with or without cart" at 2.3.
What does a 4-hour Black Friday trip look like, minute by minute?
We built a realistic trip: an early start, a line outside, one heroic dash, lots of browsing, a food court break, and a big-box run on the way home. Total: 240 minutes. Calories are for each segment, not per hour.
| Time | What you're doing | Code | METs | Minutes | 60 kg | 75 kg | 90 kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6:00 | Walk from the far end of the parking lot | 17190 | 3.8 | 8 | 30 | 38 | 46 |
| 6:08 | Stand in line before the doors open | 07040 | 1.3 | 30 | 39 | 49 | 59 |
| 6:38 | The doorbuster dash | 12020 | 7.5 | 1 | 8 | 9 | 11 |
| 6:39 | Browse stores | 05065 | 2.3 | 70 | 161 | 201 | 242 |
| 7:49 | Checkout line | 07040 | 1.3 | 20 | 26 | 33 | 39 |
| 8:09 | Mall walking with 5 to 14 lb of bags | 17016 | 4.0 | 25 | 100 | 125 | 150 |
| 8:34 | Take the stairs because the escalator is a parking lot too | 17133 | 4.5 | 2 | 9 | 11 | 14 |
| 8:36 | Food court break, sitting | 13030 | 1.5 | 30 | 45 | 56 | 68 |
| 9:06 | Big-box store run with a cart | 05060 | 3.3 | 30 | 99 | 124 | 149 |
| 9:36 | Second checkout line | 07040 | 1.3 | 12 | 16 | 20 | 23 |
| 9:48 | Walk back to the car with bags | 17016 | 4.0 | 8 | 32 | 40 | 48 |
| 9:56 | Load the trunk | 05146 | 3.8 | 4 | 15 | 19 | 23 |
| 10:00 | Total | 240 | 580 | 725 | 870 |
Segment numbers are rounded, so they can add up a calorie or two off the total. The totals come from the unrounded math: 579.7, 724.6 and 869.5.
The worked example, step by step
For a 75 kg shopper, the browsing block is 2.3 METs x 75 kg x (70 / 60) hours = 201 calories. The 30-minute line is 1.3 x 75 x 0.5 = 49 calories. Do that for all twelve segments and you get 725 calories for the trip.
Of that, 300 is what a 75 kg body burns sitting still for four hours (1.0 x 75 x 4). So the trip adds about 425 calories on top of the couch. At 60 kg the extra is about 340, and at 90 kg about 510.
The average for the whole trip works out to about 2.4 METs. That's light activity overall, with real moderate stretches mixed in.
Does Black Friday shopping count as exercise?
Partly. The CDC says adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week, with brisk walking as its example. Activities at 3.0 METs or more are generally treated as moderate.
In our trip, the segments at 3.0 METs or above (walking, carrying bags, the stairs, the cart run, loading the car and the dash) add up to 78 minutes. That's about half of a week's target, done in the name of a cheap TV. The browsing and the lines are lighter, but standing and shuffling still beat sitting.
So no, you don't need to call it leg day. But you also don't need to feel bad about skipping the gym on Black Friday.
How many steps is a Black Friday mall trip?
About 7,000 to 9,500 steps for our 4-hour trip. Here is how we got there, using the same logic as our steps to calories calculator.
In the CADENCE-Adults study, 76 adults (average height 170.7 cm) walked on a treadmill while researchers counted steps. At 3.0 mph they averaged 113.6 steps per minute, and at 2.0 mph, 96.1.
- Real walking: 41 minutes (parking lot, mall walking with bags, back to the car) x 113.6 = about 4,700 steps.
- Browsing and the cart run: 100 minutes, but nobody walks nonstop while browsing. No study has counted steps for shopping, so this part is our assumption: if you are actually moving 25% to 50% of that time at a slow 2.0 mph pace, that adds about 2,400 to 4,800 steps.
- Lines and the food court: close to zero.
Total: about 7,100 to 9,500 steps. Taller people take fewer, longer steps. Want your own number? Plug your steps into the steps to calories calculator, or see how far a walk takes you with the walk it off calculator.
How many calories does the Cyber Monday couch version burn?
Cyber Monday is November 30, 2026, and its main event takes place horizontally. Same 4 hours, very different numbers:
| 4 hours of... | Code | METs | 60 kg | 75 kg | 90 kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sitting quietly, deal tab open | 07021 | 1.0 | 240 | 300 | 360 |
| Sitting, scrolling and texting the group chat about deals | 09055 | 1.3 | 312 | 390 | 468 |
| Black Friday in person (our trip) | mixed | about 2.4 | 580 | 725 | 870 |
The in-person trip burns about 270 to 400 more than four hours of scrolling deals on the couch. There is no Compendium code for "adding to cart with one thumb." We checked that too.
Both are fine, by the way. One saves your feet, the other saves your parking spot.
What do food court favorites look like next to the trip?
Fun perspective only. Food is fuel and a good part of the day, not something you pay off at the mall. These are the brands' own published numbers, side by side with what the trip burns, just so the numbers live in one place.
| Food court favorite | Calories | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Starbucks Caffè Latte, grande (16 fl oz) | 190 | Starbucks |
| Starbucks Caramel Macchiato, grande | 250 | Starbucks |
| Starbucks Hot Chocolate, grande | 370 | Starbucks |
| Auntie Anne's Original Pretzel | 350 | Auntie Anne's |
| Auntie Anne's Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel | 480 | Auntie Anne's |
| Cinnabon MiniBon Roll | 350 | Cinnabon |
| Cinnabon BonBites, 4 count | 410 | Cinnabon |
| Cinnabon Classic Roll | 880 | Cinnabon |
For scale, the whole 4-hour trip at 75 kg is about 725 calories. A Classic Roll is a bigger number than people expect, and a MiniBon is less than half of it. That is the useful takeaway: knowing the number helps you pick the treat you actually want, not skip it.
Starbucks holiday drinks were not on the official US menu yet when we checked, so they are not in this table. Our Starbucks drink calories guide covers the year-round menu, and the Starbucks calorie calculator handles custom orders.
Should you "shop off" Thanksgiving dinner?
No. Your body needs fuel to run four hours of deal hunting, and Thanksgiving is a meal worth enjoying. If you want the numbers anyway, our Thanksgiving dinner calories breakdown has them plate by plate, and how to not gain weight during the holidays has calm, realistic habits for the whole season.
Calorie burn numbers are here to make the weekend interesting, not to make anyone feel guilty. And if you have a history of disordered eating, please work with a doctor or registered dietitian before tracking food or exercise.
Why I care more about the food court than the steps
When I started tracking, I used MyFitnessPal. The numbers were fine. Typing in a normal dinner just took several minutes, and after a long day I would skip it. Then I tried AI photo trackers. Fast, but I wasn't losing weight. When I checked a few plates ingredient by ingredient, one the camera called about 400 calories was closer to 700.
That 300-calorie gap is almost as much as the extra calories a 60 kg shopper burns on our whole 4-hour trip. Tracking food honestly matters more than any step count.
That's why I built Nouri. A food court order is the easiest thing to track by typing, because you already know what you ordered: "Auntie Anne's cinnamon sugar pretzel and a small lemonade." You can also say it, snap it, or tell Siri from the lock screen: "Hey Siri, track food in Nouri." It shows per-item reasoning and a confidence rating, and if you forgot the dip, you add it in a few words and it recalculates. It syncs with Apple Health both ways, so your Black Friday steps and your pretzel live in the same place.

For the rest of the season, start with Thanksgiving dinner calories and the walk it off calculator, just for fun.
