An Aussie Christmas in Calories: Prawns, Pav, Ham and the Esky (kJ and Calories)
A typical Aussie Christmas Day, from prawns and ham to pav and the esky, is about 14,270 kJ (3,410 calories) by FSANZ and USDA data. Every serve, kJ included.
A typical Aussie Christmas Day, from lunch to the last rum ball, is about 14,270 kJ (3,410 calories) by FSANZ and USDA food data. Lunch of prawns, oysters, ham, roast lamb, salads and a roll is 4,588 kJ (1,098 calories). A slice of pav with cream and berries is 1,443 kJ (345 calories), and a can of full-strength from the esky is 574 kJ (137).
Short version: Christmas is one day, and a summer Christmas is mostly seafood, salad and fruit, which is a pretty friendly place to start. This post just puts honest numbers on the table so you never have to guess. If you want the American version with prime rib and eggnog, that is in our Christmas dinner calories guide. This one is all prawns, pav and the esky.
How we counted (kJ and calories)
Australian labels and the national food database list energy in kilojoules, so every row shows both. Calories are kJ divided by 4.184.
- Australian foods come from the FSANZ Australian Food Composition Database (AFCD, Release 3), with each food's ID in the Sources.
- Foods AFCD doesn't cover (potato salad, coleslaw, trifle, mince pies, rum balls) come from USDA FoodData Central, with FDC IDs.
- Serves are realistic, not tiny. Each row shows the grams we used, so you can scale up or down.
How many calories are in Christmas prawns and oysters?
Seafood is the bargain of the Aussie Christmas table: lots of protein, not much energy.
| Seafood | Serve | kJ | Calories | Protein |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black tiger prawns, bought cooked, peeled | 150g | 573 | 137 | 30.3g |
| Banana prawns, bought cooked, peeled | 150g | 644 | 154 | 34.8g |
| Prawns cooked from green (raw), peeled | 150g | 760 | 182 | 40.7g |
| Sydney rock oysters, half a dozen | 90g | 264 | 63 | 9.5g |
| Pacific oysters, half a dozen | 90g | 250 | 60 | 9.7g |
| Sydney rock oysters, a dozen | 180g | 527 | 126 | 19.1g |
A big pile of peeled prawns is under 800 kJ, whichever kind you buy from the co-op. Oysters are about 11 calories each: USDA weighs one raw oyster at 15g, and AFCD puts Sydney rocks at 293 kJ per 100g. The cocktail sauce, aioli and buttered bread beside them are where the energy really lives, so track those as their own items.
How many calories in Christmas ham and roast lamb?
| Roast | Serve | kJ | Calories | Protein |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leg ham, lean | 100g, about 2 thick slices | 467 | 112 | 17.0g |
| Lamb leg roast, lean only | 120g | 890 | 213 | 36.7g |
| Lamb leg roast, untrimmed (with the fat) | 120g | 1,150 | 275 | 34.2g |
| Pork leg roast, untrimmed | 120g | 1,111 | 266 | 37.4g |
| Turkey breast, lean, baked | 120g | 778 | 186 | 35.3g |
| Beef sausage off the BBQ, grilled | 75g | 683 | 163 | 12.9g |
Leg ham is surprisingly light at 467 kJ per 100g, but that AFCD figure is for lean ham. The fat edge on a Christmas ham off the bone, and any glaze, add more, so describe the slice honestly when you track it. With lamb, the fat cap is the difference: 120g of untrimmed roast lamb is 62 calories more than the same weight of lean.
Potato salad, coleslaw and the bread rolls
| Side | Serve | kJ | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Potato salad, made with mayonnaise | 138g, a regular scoop | 970 | 232 |
| Potato salad, made with mayonnaise | 1 cup, 275g | 1,933 | 462 |
| Coleslaw | 110g, a regular scoop | 538 | 129 |
| White bread roll | 60g | 626 | 150 |
The potato salad quietly outweighs the prawns. One generous cup of it is 462 calories, more than three times the 150g of tiger prawns next to it, and almost all of the difference is mayo. Nobody needs to skip it. Just know that a second scoop is a bigger move than a second helping of prawns.
Pavlova, trifle and Christmas pudding calories
| Dessert | Serve | kJ | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pavlova slice: 40g meringue, 50g whipped thickened cream, 75g berries | 1 slice | 1,443 | 345 |
| Trifle | 1 cup, 145g | 1,025 | 245 |
| Christmas (plum) pudding, homemade | 100g wedge | 1,398 | 334 |
| Vanilla custard, regular fat | 125g | 514 | 123 |
| Vanilla ice cream | 60g scoop | 484 | 116 |
| Mince pie | small 60g pie | 726 | 173 |
| Rum ball, no bake | 1 ball, 11g | 237 | 57 |
Neither database has a pavlova entry, so we built a slice from its parts: commercial meringue (1,538 kJ per 100g), thickened cream, strawberries and blueberries. The meringue and cream are 317 of its 345 calories; the berries are 28. The mince pie row uses USDA's mince pie per 100g on a small 60g pie, so check the weight on your box. We couldn't find White Christmas slice in AFCD or USDA, so it isn't in our numbers. Describe your piece and its size when you track it.
Pudding and custard together come to 457 calories (1,912 kJ) for a 100g wedge and 125g of custard. If you're already picking from the tins of chocolate, our advent calendar calories guide has the door-by-door numbers, and the sibling Christmas cookie calories post covers the biscuit tin.
How many calories are in the esky?
| Drink | Serve | kJ | Calories | Standard drinks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full-strength beer (4 to 4.9%) | 375mL can or stubby | 574 | 137 | 1.4 |
| Mid-strength beer (3 to 3.9%) | 375mL | 484 | 116 | 1.1 |
| Light beer (1 to 2.9%) | 375mL | 379 | 91 | 0.8 |
| Apple cider (about 4 to 5%) | 375mL | 791 | 189 | 1.5 |
| Sparkling white (bubbles) | 150mL glass | 459 | 110 | 1.5 |
| Rosé | 150mL glass | 434 | 104 | 1.4 |
| Chardonnay | 150mL glass | 460 | 110 | 1.5 |
| Shiraz | 150mL glass | 507 | 121 | 1.7 |
| Cola, regular | 375mL can | 802 | 192 | 0 |
In Australia a standard drink is about 10 grams of alcohol, per healthdirect, the government's health information service. We worked out standard drinks from the alcohol grams per 100mL in AFCD divided by 10. A can of regular cola has more energy than a can of full-strength beer, which surprises most people at the BBQ.
Christmas Day is usually hot, too. To help prevent heatstroke, healthdirect suggests drinking plenty of water on hot days, even before you feel thirsty, and limiting caffeine and alcohol. Keeping a few bottles of water in the esky next to the beers is the easy version. For any drink not on this list, try the alcohol calorie calculator, or see the lowest calorie alcoholic drinks.
A typical Aussie Christmas Day plate, added up
Here's lunch the way a lot of families actually serve it: seafood first, then the roast, the salads and a roll.
| Plate | Serve | kJ | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black tiger prawns, cooked | 150g | 573 | 137 |
| Sydney rock oysters | 6 (90g) | 264 | 63 |
| Leg ham, lean | 100g | 467 | 112 |
| Roast lamb leg, untrimmed | 120g | 1,150 | 275 |
| Potato salad | 138g scoop | 970 | 232 |
| Coleslaw | 110g scoop | 538 | 129 |
| White bread roll | 60g | 626 | 150 |
| Total | 4,588 | 1,098 |
That plate has about 100 grams of protein, mostly from the prawns, lamb and ham. For comparison, the American prime rib plate in our Christmas dinner calories breakdown is 1,582 calories with wine and cake.
The whole Christmas Day, from lunch to the esky
Now add the afternoon grazing, the drinks and dessert. Breakfast isn't included, since that's anything from a bacon and egg roll to a mango on the verandah.
| Part of the day | What's in it | kJ | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lunch plate | Everything above | 4,588 | 1,098 |
| Afternoon grazing | 150g cherries, 150g mango, 50g plain chips, 40g cheddar on 20g water crackers, 2 rum balls, 1 mince pie | 4,071 | 972 |
| Esky drinks | 2 glasses of bubbles, 3 full-strength cans | 2,639 | 630 |
| Dessert | 1 pav slice (345), 80g pudding (267), 100g custard (98) | 2,972 | 710 |
| Whole day | 14,270 | 3,410 |
The surprise is the arvo. Grazing comes to 972 calories without anyone sitting down for it, and the chips (256) and mince pie (173) are bigger than the cherries and mango combined (190). The esky line is about 7.1 standard drinks.
A lighter but still festive Christmas Day
Same table, same traditions, a few quiet swaps. Nothing gets banned, and you still get pav.
| Part of the day | What's in it | kJ | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lunch plate | Prawns 150g, 6 oysters, ham 100g, lean roast lamb 100g, half a scoop of potato salad (69g), coleslaw 110g, no roll | 3,069 | 734 |
| Afternoon grazing | 150g cherries, 150g mango, 1 rum ball | 1,035 | 247 |
| Esky drinks | 1 glass of bubbles, 2 light beers | 1,217 | 291 |
| Dessert | Pav slice with 30g meringue, 25g cream, 100g berries | 967 | 231 |
| Whole day | 6,288 | 1,503 |
That's about 1,900 calories lighter from lunch onwards, with roughly 95 grams of protein still on the plate. The biggest single wins, in order:
- Skip the second grazing round of chips, cheese and the mince pie: the full grazing list to the lighter one saves 725 calories.
- Swap 3 full-strength cans for 2 light beers, and 2 glasses of bubbles for 1: saves 339 calories.
- Halve the pudding plan and go berry-heavy on the pav: 710 down to 231 saves 479.
- Lean lamb instead of untrimmed, and a smaller slice: saves 98.
Pick the one or two that suit you, not all of them. Christmas is supposed to be fun. If food or numbers have ever felt stressful for you, please skip the counting and lean on your GP or an accredited practising dietitian instead.
What about Boxing Day leftovers?
Boxing Day is the same food, colder, eaten straight from the fridge. A ham and salad roll is the 60g roll (150), 100g of ham (112) and a scoop of coleslaw (129), or 391 calories (1,631 kJ). Cold prawns and a handful of cherries are one of the lightest lunches of the whole summer.
Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, so Boxing Day is a Saturday and the long weekend can blur together. If the day turns into a road trip and a servo or Maccas stop, the Maccas calorie calculator and our list of the highest protein fast food in Australia make the stop easy. Feeling seedy? The sibling hangover breakfast calories post has you covered, and how to not gain weight during the holidays zooms out to the whole season.
How to track an Aussie Christmas in Nouri
I built Nouri because of plates like this one. I used photo trackers before, and when I checked their estimates against what the ingredients actually added up to, a plate the camera called around 400 calories worked out closer to 700. A camera can't see the mayo through the potato salad or the cream under the berries on a pav. A summer Christmas plate is full of exactly those hidden extras.
So there are four equal ways to add it. Type it like a text to a mate: "150g prawns, six Sydney rock oysters, two slices of ham, roast lamb, a scoop of potato salad and coleslaw." Say it the same way. Snap a photo of the plate: Nouri turns it into a sentence first, so you can read what it thinks it saw and add "made with mayo" before anything is counted. Or, with your hands full of tongs and wrapping paper, ask Siri from the lock screen: "Hey Siri, track food in Nouri," say one sentence, and a card shows your calories and macros right away. That's the best Siri tracking of any calorie tracking app, and it suits a day spent mostly outdoors.
Every item comes back with its own calories, macros and reasoning, plus a confidence rating, so if the lamb slice was bigger than you said, add "large slice" and it recalculates. In our 100-meal accuracy benchmark, Nouri scored 92.1/100 (MyFitnessPal 77.0). Nouri is iPhone (iOS only) and syncs with Apple Health; you can try it free.
The week matters more than the day. The Sunday Nouri Report, which arrives once you've tracked 4 or more days, puts Christmas Day inside your weekly average, next to your targets, with one clear focus for the week ahead. Most calorie apps give you numbers. Nouri gives you answers.

What is the easiest way to track calories on Christmas Day?
Type or say the plate the way you'd describe it to a mate, like "prawns, six oysters, ham and a scoop of potato salad," and Nouri returns calories and macros with the reasoning for each item. From the lock screen, "Hey Siri, track food in Nouri" does it in one sentence, and the Sunday Nouri Report shows the whole week, not just one big day.
Eat the prawns, have the pav, and leave the guilt in the wrapping paper. If you want the number, add it in Nouri in one line. For the rest of the season, see Christmas dinner calories and advent calendar calories.
