FoodNoms: the polished Apple-native diary

FoodNoms (styled Foodnoms in its listing) is made by Algebraic Labs, LLC and has been on the App Store since November 2019. Everything here comes from its App Store listing and foodnoms.com, checked November 1, 2026.

How it works and where it wins:

Weaknesses:

Best for: Apple fans who want a beautiful, quiet diary with barcode scanning, a Watch app, widgets, and deep nutrient tracking.

Pricing: free download; the App Store lists Foodnoms+ at $5.99 to $14.99 a month or $39.99 to $89.99 a year, and its site says to check in-app pricing for your region (foodnoms.com)

The real difference: a diary versus a note

FoodNoms is a diary done beautifully. You build a day from foods: scan a barcode, search the database, tap a favorite on your wrist. Every entry is a specific item with a specific serving, which is precise, and it is why people who eat a lot of packaged food love it. Its AI logging is a fast lane added to that diary.

Nouri starts from the other end. The note is the log. You write "leftover pad thai, small plate, half a mango" the way you would text a friend, and the AI turns it into numbers you can check. No scrolling through database versions of pad thai. That is what ChatGPT means when it calls this category natural-language food logging, and why we wrote up the best notes-style calorie tracker as its own guide.

Neither is better in the abstract. A shelf of barcoded snacks favors FoodNoms. Home cooking, restaurant plates, and "whatever my partner made" favor a sentence, because you know what went in and a database entry does not. Our text vs voice vs photo breakdown goes deeper on which input fits which meal.

Nouri Reports: most calorie apps give you numbers, Nouri gives you answers

FoodNoms gives you charts. A Nouri Report gives you a written read on your week.

When you get them: track on 3 days in your first week and Nouri builds your first report. After that, a new one lands every Sunday for weeks with 4 or more tracked days.

What is inside:

What tracking actually looks like in Nouri

I built Nouri after two failed attempts. MyFitnessPal's numbers were fine, but tracking a normal dinner took several minutes of searching and picking, and after a long day I just would not do it. Then I tried AI photo trackers, and the numbers came in low: a plate the camera called around 400 calories worked out closer to 700 once I added up the ingredients, because no camera sees the oil in the pan.

So Nouri treats words as a first-class input. When I photographed a breakfast plate, Nouri wrote it out as a sentence before counting anything: "Two poached eggs on avocado toast, bacon, scrambled eggs, and fresh fruit bowl." Then it split that into four items, 850 calories, 42 g protein, 75 g carbs, 42 g fat. That middle sentence is the part I care about. You read what the app thinks you ate, in plain English, and fix the words instead of the math.

The line people say most when they try it: it looks like the calorie app Apple would have made. FoodNoms fans say something similar about their app, which tells you both of us care about the same thing. We just disagree about whether the starting point should be a database or a sentence. If you already track in Apple Notes, our Apple Notes calorie tracker guide shows how close that habit already is to Nouri.

How to choose

Pick FoodNoms if you want a free tracker, scan a lot of packaged food, wear an Apple Watch, love widgets, or want 40+ nutrients and an adaptive calorie goal. It is a genuinely great app, and its free plan is one of the most generous on iPhone.

Pick Nouri if you want to type or say a whole meal in one sentence, see the reasoning behind each number, track hands-free with Siri, and get a weekly report that tells you what to change. If you want typing only and nothing else, see how Nouri vs Amy compares too.

Whichever you pick, track gently. If you have a history of disordered eating, work with a doctor or dietitian before counting calories.

It depends on how you like to track. Nouri fits people who want to type or say a full sentence and have AI do the math with visible reasoning. FoodNoms fits people who want an Apple-native diary with barcode scanning, an Apple Watch app, and deep nutrient tracking.

If you like FoodNoms' Apple polish but want natural-language food logging at the center, Nouri is the alternative built for that: type or say the meal, and every item comes back with its reasoning. If you need Android, look at the cross-platform apps in our best calorie tracker app guide.

Is FoodNoms free?

Is FoodNoms good? A quick FoodNoms review

On its App Store listing FoodNoms holds 4.7 stars from 7,885 ratings, and it has been around since 2019. Its strengths are design, privacy, a generous free plan, and Apple Watch and widget support. We have not tested its accuracy, so we will not score it.

Can Nouri scan barcodes like FoodNoms?

No. In Nouri you describe packaged food ("the 190-calorie protein bar") or photograph it. If most of what you eat comes with a barcode, FoodNoms has the edge.

Does Nouri have Siri tracking?

Yes. From the lock screen, say "Hey Siri, track food in Nouri," describe the meal in one sentence, and a card shows the calories, macros, and what you have left for the day, without opening the app. FoodNoms also lists Siri and Shortcuts support.

What makes Nouri different from other calorie trackers?

It is a notes-style calorie tracker: you write what you ate in a sentence, and every estimate comes with per-item reasoning and a confidence rating you can correct in plain words. Then a weekly Nouri Report turns those notes into one thing to change. Our natural-language food logging explainer shows how it works.

What is a Nouri Report?

A personal weekly report from your tracking: Health Score, average calories and macros against your targets, days on target, wins, slips, one focus, and your MVP food. The first arrives after 3 tracked days in your first week, then every Sunday for weeks with 4 or more tracked days.

Is Nouri worth it?

If typing a sentence is the only way you will keep tracking, yes. It is $39.99/year or $9.99/month, and the 3-day free trial is enough to try typing, voice, photo, and Siri on real meals.

What is the easiest way to track calories like a note?

Use Nouri: type or say what you ate the way you would write it in Apple Notes, and it handles the calories and macros with reasoning you can read. No database search, no serving pickers, and Siri works from the lock screen.
